Some careers feel too big to fit in one story. Lionel Messi's does. On October 6, 2026, at the Monumental in Buenos Aires, the boy from Rosario played his farewell match for Argentina against Benin, his 208th appearance after 207 caps and 125 goals going into the night. He has retired from international football, though not from the game: he still plays for Inter Miami.
This is the Messi life story from start to finish, told through openly licensed photos from every stage: the street he grew up on, the Barcelona years, Paris, the World Cup in Qatar, Miami and the last night in Argentina's shirt. If you're here for the numbers side, our Lionel Messi net worth breakdown covers that.

Lionel Andrés Messi was born on June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina. He joined the youth set-up at his hometown club, Newell's Old Boys, as a small boy and stood out right away for how the ball seemed to stay glued to his feet.
He was also smaller than every boy his age. Doctors diagnosed a growth hormone deficiency, and the treatment was expensive: about $1,500 a monthmore than his family's insurance and his club could keep paying for.
FC Barcelona saw him play, agreed to cover the treatment, and the whole family moved to Spain. He was 13. That decision, made on a famous paper napkin according to football legend, set up the next two decades of the sport.

Messi came through Barcelona's academy and made his first-team debut as a 17-year-old in 2004. By 2005 he was a regular in the squad, long hair, quick feet and a habit of going past three defenders as if they weren't there.

What followed is hard to summarise. Barcelona won the Champions League in 2009, and Messi won his first Ballon d'Or that year. He would go on to win it a record eight times: 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

By the time he left in 2021, he was the club's all-time top scorer and appearance maker, with 672 goals in 778 games in all competitions.

Barcelona won another Champions League in 2015, with Messi at the centre of one of the most feared attacking trios the game has seen. For a decade, it felt as if every season brought another record.
In August 2021 Barcelona announced that, despite an agreement with Messi, a new contract could not happen because of financial and league regulations. He joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he won two French league titles.

The trophy he wanted most came in December 2022. In one of the greatest finals ever played, Argentina drew 3-3 with France and won 4-2 on penalties. Messi scored twice in the final and once in the shoot-out, finished the tournament with seven goals, and won the Golden Ball as its best player, the first man to win it twice.
That night settled the GOAT argument for a lot of fans. He had already won the Copa America with Argentina in 2021, and he added another in 2024.

In July 2023 Messi signed for Inter Miami. The club won the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters' Shield in 2024, and in December 2025 they beat Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1 to win their first MLS Cupwith Messi named MVP of the final after two assists.

At the 2026 World Cup in North America, Messi led Argentina to the final again. They lost it to Spain, and weeks later he announced on social media that he was retiring from the national team. "It was a decision that hurt and still hurts to my core," he wrote, "but I understand that the time has come."
The farewell came on October 6, 2026, a friendly against Benin at the Monumental, with a "Gracias, Leo" fan festival around it. He is still under contract with Inter Miami, so this is the end of the Argentina story, not the end of Messi the footballer.
Trophies make the case on paper, but people who watched him every week tend to talk about other things:
